Forget Wag! Let’s Hit Up the Nest!....or Dub’s

Oh Wagoner Hall. It’s that heavenly place that we’re first introduced to the moment we come to this wonderful campus here at Wilmington. We gather there during orientation, experience the delicious, fulfilling foods that we are supposed to believe will be provided throughout the semesters (false), and eventually leave with happy faces and stomachs. Then we come back in the Fall for the new semester and it all goes south. Wag might become gross, repetitive, or just not as good as the first time we had it. Then we venture over to Hawk’s Nest and see what they have to offer, or maybe take a look at that new place in the Warwick Center called Dub’s Cafe. I have my quarrels and qualms when I think of these different dining options on our campus that I’ve been experiencing for some time now. But I’ve come to appreciate certain aspects of them all that I hope you’ve noticed as well.

Okay, okay. I’ve always thought that Wag was a pretty chill place to eat. I love the sense of community that it brings and the variety of foods that it at least attempts to present to us students day in and day out. At some point, it’s going to get repetitive. You can only have so much variety. But one thing that I just can’t understand is why they keep doing the Chinese Day at Wag. I’m sorry, but that is just a failed attempt at Chinese food. Already Chinese food is ridiculously misconstrued in America from what it actually is in China, but when Wag tries, it’s just a turnoff. I’m no food critic or anything but that sh!@ is nasty.

Now, if you’re really craving yourself some Chick-fil-A or some sushi, then you can make your way over to The Hawk’s Nest. Over here, you know what you’re going to get. There are no surprises or changes to anybody’s menu throughout the entire year……ever. Now, this can be a turnoff, or a turn on, whichever way you want to look at it. I look at it as a turnoff. All of the same foods, all the time, everyday, 5 days a week, yaddayadda. I need some variety in my foods. I can’t have the same foods all the time. Hawk’s Nest is alright, but only when you need it.

Now onto the mecca of all the dining locations. Dub’s Café. If you haven’t been here yet, you gotta hit this place UP. It’s new to this year and it’s located in the Warwick Center. Now, Dub’s Café is unique because of what it has to offer. First off, they have the usuals like the salad bar, and the drink station, and snacks. But the staple of it all is the pasta bar. Fresh pasta made everyday right in front of you. Variety is the key word here. Different pastas. Everyday. They even throw in certain days when they work with rice or orzo type pasta. Not only does Dub’s offer a pasta bar, but they have a hot bar section where different types of meals are served. I like to view it as a type of “mini-wag” because it offers hot meals like Wag does, but it pays much more attention to detail and quality, rather than quantity.

Of all of these different places to eat, I can easily say that Dub’s is my most frequent client. Wag will always remain my first true love, but Dub’s has recently been creating its own special place in my heart. Hawk’s Nest will never be able to compete simply because it just doesn’t offer variety. No surprises there. So, yeah, let’s hit up Dub’s today.

  1. I completely agree with you about Wag and Dub's. When I first came here freshman year, I was like WOW Wagoner is actually a great dining hall, compared to the ones you hear about on other campuses. That quickly changed to "Ugh, Wag...again? Ugh."

Dub's is awesome though! It is different everyday and like you said, they actually pay attention to quality there. However, I do like Hawk's Nest, apparently a little more than you do, because of that consistency and convenience. I don't want to eat there everyday, just like I don't want to eat anymore else everyday, but knowing what the menus are and which ones I like and don't is pretty great for me.

  2. First off I glad to hear someone eats that stuff, cause this girl doesn't!! Since my first day at that school, it has been extremely hard to me to understand those who can eat that food without throwing up, or having severe stomach issues!! I can't eat that food to save my life! It is absolutely the Grossest Food I have ever encountered before, other than that time at the grocery store I bought a bad Steak! GROSS, I’m sorry I’m not any better than anyone else, but Man I think every single thing they serve is frozen then reheated and frozen again!! NASTYYYY! But, prove me wrong deji, if you want to argue with me. I just haven’t found one thing at that school that tastes good. Not even the Quizznos or Chick-fil ... Now that pasta place, I have never seen it! So next time you’re in the area bring me a to-go plate and I promise I will give you my honest opinion!!!

  3. I half agree. I absolutely love Dub's and it is definitely the best meal option on campus, but I always chose the Hawk's Nest over Wag. You forgot to mention how Wag gives some people the wags. Every time I eat Wag's hot food, I feel sick to my stomach for the next hour, which is no bueno. Dub's never makes me feel sick, and Hawk's Nest is pretty safe too. I enjoy the Varsity Grill in the Hawk's nest or Chick Fil A. Recently I've been getting dollar taco's at Jole Mole. UNCW definitely made a good decision and a step in the right direction by creating Dub's and the pasta bar.

  4. I lived on campus freshmen and sophmore year.I lived in Cornerstone and then the Suites and it was imiporssible for me to eat anything. I would get a salad at Wag with vineger for dressing and on the whole campus, that was all I could eat. Even when Hawk's Nest reopened all I could eat there was their salad but I couldn't use my meals for it. I started making my friends and boyfriend use my meal plan because it was a waste of money for me to have one. I know that I have already talked about it but it's frustrating to go to a school that doesn't have any regard for people with allergies or sensitivities to food.I think the only people who can eat Wag and not feel it immediatley after are people who have stomachs made of steel.

  5. I cannot believe that it cost almost $9 to eat at Wag! That is absolutely ridiculous. The only thing decent at Wag is the sandwich station. The workers in there are always rude, and obnoxious. I completely agree with you in saying that Dubs is better. I wish Dubs was open when I was living on campus and with meal plan! There are several options, and its just much better. I wonder how much longer Wag will be open.

  6. Wag is only good after a night out and you would eat anything at that point. Wag is more of a social gathering, I agree with that, the atmosphere is the best. The price though is outrageous, I might as well go out to eat at that price, 9-10 dollars, come on, you aren't serving gournmet food...
Dubs is great, I feel like there is always something new and fresh, it seems healthier then others. Only down side is they have no dessert...sucky. The seating is also limited and a little awkward.
Hawks nest is dependable, it is always the same but its stability and a safe bet. I love the sushi and chick-fil-a, I live on that. I also love the whole building and layout. My favorite is the convient store, I just wish you could get fresh fruit everywhere.

  7. I think the best meals at Wag are breakfast and Thanksgiving. I'm definitely going to miss those when I graduate (the food, not the price). I like the Hawks Nest too. I like to know there is at least one place on campus that offers consistently good food. I have yet to visit Dubs. Although, after your review, I will definitely be visiting it soon.

  8. I am excited to hear about Dubs. I did not even know it existed but I am definitely going to make it a point to check it out. I hate Wag, maybe because I never got immune to it. I am a senior and I have never lived on campus, so since Wag was not a necessity I guess I have always thought it was gross. I have eaten at Wag for "Wagsgiving" which was really good, but the times I went just to go with my friends I would only eat the cereal. I am really glad to hear about a new food source and will definitely check it out...Thanks!

  9. Oh my gosh I am so excited that you have talked about Dubs Cafe because I have been scared to visit it! It is hard to change and it seems like every year I have been here, my places keep moving or growing or leaving! I used to love Wag. I think everyone should try it some time... its legend on campus (not in a good way). I do enjoy the Hawks nest. There are so many other schools that have nothing like this and that is great. I can go get a sandwich if that is what I am thinking. I had no idea what Dubs Cafe entailed so I am super glad that you have talked about it. Thanks for talking about it! Good advertising :)

  10. Whenever I get food on campus (not very often), I always go to Hawk's Nest. It's just closer to the buildings I'm always in (Leutze, Bear and Morton).

There was a point last semester where I was eating Chick-Fil-A like every time I went. I just never get sick of nuggets with barbeque sauce.

Every once in a while I'll get the chinese food or sushi. I tried the hamburgers and mexican place once but didn't like either.

I'll have to try Dub's though. Pasta bar sounds good.

  11. I really know nothing about the on campus food here; I have only eaten on campus a hand full of times. My Freshman year I want to Appalachian State. The food system there is a little different than here. Up there every item is paid for by dollar amount...there is no unlimited food there. So you never make the choice of more food or good food. On campus we had a McAlister's, A fancy restaurant (like formal), Chick-fil-A, pizza place that delivers, TCBY frozen treats (why), and 2 regular cafeterias (similar to wag), and a food court (hawk nest like). The food at App was not subcontracted out, it is still run by the school- I feel like that helps make the food better. When I was there all we could think about was the unlimited meals...me because I was hungry...others because of "all natural" substances.
